Checking Up on the Chicks

Dixie Chicks

After a couple years of death threats, crushed CDs, and a ban by country radio stations, 2006 looked pretty good to the Dixie Chicks—a new album and a documentary film were set to release in the same year.

When we last checked in on the Chicks, searches were spiking on their single "Not Ready to Make Nice." Some things just haven't changed. The song is still buzzin' strong, and searchers continue to look up lyrics, tickets, songs, and photos.

The new piece to the Chick puzzle is "Shut Up and Sing"—a film that follows the group after Natalie Maines told a London concert crowd in 2003 that she was ashamed George W. Bush hails from Texas. Controversy seems to roll along with the band. Last week, NBC had reportedly refused to accept ads for the movie.

Whether their fan base has changed since 2003 or not, it's certainly diverse. The majority of people searching on their hit song are in the 13-17 age range, while those aged 35-44 are looking up the flick.

Buzz on the film climbed prior to its limited release on October 27, but has seen a slow decline since then. And that's pretty much the same deal with searches on the Dixie Chicks. But queries on firecracker Natalie Maines have exploded (+576%) in the past month. Will buzz grow when "Shut Up and Sing" sees more theaters? Leave a comment and log your prediction.
