Nintendo WiiLet's be honest—video games have become a little boring. Innovation has been replaced by endless sequels and controllers have sprouted too many damned buttons. Fortunately, there is hope. The Nintendo Wii hits stores this month, and this baby oozes both simplicity and fun.
Searches on the Wii are up 72% this week and related queries on "nintendo wii release date" and "nintendo wii preorder" have also jumped. Why all the excitement? Well, a new console always causes big buzz, but the Wii has something else going for it—elegant design and an inspired philosophy.
Nintendo, which has taken a beating from Microsoft's Xbox and Sony's PlayStation consoles of late, wants to make video games an inclusive activity. So, they've designed a system they hope will appeal to traditional gamers as well as new converts. The Wii's controller is motion controlled with just a few buttons (hallelujah), and—bonus—the games look tremendously fun.
We doubt Nintendo will ever again dominate the industry in terms of sales like they once did, but searches show the Wii is a bold step in the right direction.
